Symptom

Sometimes, when focusing on a new slide, I get strange black bits instead of the focused specimen that I expect.

Cause

This appears to be dust or debris on the coverslip. It is a normal problem to encounter.

Resolution

Move the objective down about 850 steps (0.170mm) to focus on the specimen.
